David Thomas & The Pedestrians “The Sound of the Sand and the Other Songs of the Pedestrian”

ここでも何度か紹介してきた米国Pere UbuのヴォーカリストDavid Thomasの初のソロアルバムが、本作品です。世界一「悲しい」歌を歌う彼が、Pere Ubuで英国/欧州ツアーをやった時に、当時、イケイケだったRough TradeのオーナーGeoff Travisの勧めで、ソロ作を作ってみたとのこと。Pedestrians(「通行人」の意: このネーミングなんかは同時代のレジデンツにも通じるのでは？)は、Richard Thompson, Anton Fire(Feelies/元Lounge Lizards), Philip Moxham(Young Marble Giants), Eddie Thompson(のちにTan-Tanと名乗る), Allen Revenstine (Pere Ubu), Chris Cutler(Art Bears/Henry Cow), John Greaves, Mayo Thompson (Red Crayola /Pere Ubu), Paul Hamann, Ralph Carney (Tin Huey, Swollen Monkeys), Scott Krause(Pere Ubu), Alan Greene(元Pere Ubu)の錚々たるメンバーです。元々のコンセプトは、歌/歌詞から作ってみたいと言うことです。当然、Pere UbuのVoの彼としては、自由に歌詞を書き、それに沿うように音を付けていくのは、やってみたいことだったとは想像できます。彼は、その巨体やアクションに似合わず、非常に繊細かつネジくれた表現をするアーティストであり、本作でもその節回しなど健在ですが、その内容はPere Ubu以上に難解で予測不能なアヴァン・ロックの様相を呈しています(実は、本作の文章を書き出すまで、３日間聴いてきましたが、中々、その意図が汲み辛かった)。また、 Voのアルバムなのに、インストの曲があったりとか、ちょっと偏屈なところもありますね。あと、英語がもっと分かれば、歌詞とかのニュアンスも分かりやすいかもしれません。なので、万人にはお勧めできませんが、彼の「素」のキャリアを体験する為には聴いておいた方がいいでしょう。因みに私のは見本盤でした。
