ビッグ・ブラザー&ザ・ホールディング・カンパニーのアルバム“Cheap Thrills”の50周年記念盤。
大人の事情でライヴ・アルバムとしてリリースされていた“Cheap Thrills”だが、本当は“Ball and Chain”だけがライヴ録音で残りは歓声を後付けしたスタジオ録音であった。今回は装飾がカットされ、スタジオで録音されたリアルなセッションが29曲と1968年4月12日ウィンターランド・ボールルームで録音された“Ball and Chain”の未発表ライヴの全30曲が収録されている。そして、スタジオ録音の29曲のうち24曲が未発表となっている。
“Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills”はバンドがアルバム・タイトルにしたかったが、レコード会社の反対にあって“Cheap Thrills”になったようだ。50年の歳月が流れ、バンドの生々しい演奏とジャニスの歌声が聴けるのが嬉しい。個人的な思いだが、ジャニスは命を削って歌っていたのではないかと思う。
聴いておきたいアルバムのひとつ。
