Dionne Warwick / Friends In Love
This is one of the best Jay Graydon producing works. The album includes 3 tunes written by Jay Graydon, the opener "For You" with Richard Page and Steve George, "Friends In Love" with David Foster and Bill Champlin and "What Is This". And you may be aware that Dionne sings "Never Gonna Let You Go" on this album, which is much well-known by Sergio Mendes version released in 1983. Mark Winkler / Jazz Life
Mark Winkler started to reveal his songwriting ability in mid 70's. The first well-known tune was "Tropical Nights" performed by Liza Minnelli in 1977. On the other hand, Winkler made demo recordings in order to get an artist deal in those days. He signed a deal with First America Records, Seattle and completed his first solo album "Jazz Life" around 1980. And at last, "Jazz Life" was released by Music Is Medicine, the subsidiary label of First American. As the album title shows, Winkler performs pop jazz tunes throughout the album. And in 2001, Cool Sound reissued this album with an unreleased tune "Jazz Is Alive" originally recorded for this album in 1982. Kenny Marks /Follow Him
Detroit native Kenneth Michael Marks, aka Kenny Marks, moved to Nashville around 1978 with his demos when he was 28 years old or so. Almost a year later, Marks knocked the door of Word, the leading CCM label and succeeded to get a deal with Word/Myrth. However it took almost three years before releasing his first album "Follow Him" produced by Keith Thomas. Since then, Kenny Marks was one of the mainstay artists in CCM. His music had Bryan Adams vibe, personally his voice reminds me of Tommy Funderburk's mid 1980's works, i.e. "Front" and "What If". Someone said that his pop tune had same atmosphere as Nielsen-Pearson's one. Release: 1982 Label: Myrrh, USA (MSB-6714) First Reissued CD Release: 10 March, 2001 (Cool Sound, Inc. Pete Carlson / Dreamer's Dream
It was 1974 that Pete Carlson's first effort "Jesus, Your Name" was released under a semiprivate label named "Pinebrook". Then, Pete got a deal with Tempo, Kansas City based midsize CCM label and released 3 albums "You Were There"(1976), "Hideaway"(1977) and "Off The Beaten Path" (1979). To be honest, I did not listen to those 70's works because those are said to be too folky and acoustic for AOR/Westcoast lovers. Pete Carlson sought for the change, and Pete decided to work with Keith Thomas, who became well-known later for his producing works with big names including Amy Grant, James Ingram, Whitney Houston, Michael Bolton. Keith Thomas well-arranged keyboard-oriented production brought Pete into the different dimension. Thus, Pete released Keith Thomas producing album “Dreamer's Dream" in 1982, with Day Spring, one of the major CCM labels. I believe that Dunn Huff's guitar solo on the track "The Love Of God" is one of his best sessions in early 1980's. On the other hand, Please note that the album "Dreamer's Dream" includes a typical not-well-arranged Christian Music tune "Thanksong" and on several tunes, Pete's vocal style had not been well-sophistcated as yet. Release: 1982 Label: Day Spring, USA (DST-4101) First Reissued CD Release: 10 February, 2001 (Cool Sound, Inc. Japan, COOL-064) Tracks: 1. Let Him Hold Your Heart 2. Run Inside 3. Dreamer's Dream 4. Le Roux / Last Safe Place
Last Safe Place" is Le Roux’s fourth album originally released in 1982 under RCA, which followed the album "Up" (1980) under Capitol Records. On this fourth album, Le Roux succeeded to reveal various style of music, i.e. the hard-driven American Rock like "Addicted", a little-bit Styx-vein tune "The Last Safe Place On Earth", a sophisticated mid-tempo pop ballad tune "Inspiration" and a little-bit Caribian-flavored tune "Midnight Summer Dream". And the album was the final one to feature the original personnel of Bobby Campo (trumpet, flugelhorn, flute, congas, percussion, vocals), Tony Haselden (electric guitar, vocals), Leon Medica (bass), David Peters (drums/percussion), Jeff Pollard (electric and acoustic guitars, lead vocals), and Rod Roddy (Rhodes electric piano, acoustic piano, clavinet, Oberheim synthesizer, vocals). Le Roux scored their incipient Top 20 pop entry with "Nobody Said It Was Easy" (aka "Lookin' for the Lights") peaking at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March of 1982. Greg Guidry / Over The Line
Greg Guidry (Gregory Mark Guidry) was born in St. Louis, Missiles on January 23, 1954. His musical journey started in 1977 when Guidry moved to Nashville. In 1977, he signed a deal with CBS Songs Publishing. Guidry started singwriting and peformed with various bands during that time. In 1979, "In It For Love" was recorded by England Dan & John Ford Coley and climbed up the chart. Guidry’s another song "Gotta Have More Love" by Climax Blues Band followed. In 1981, Robbie Dupree also recorded "Are You Ready For Love" for his second solo album "Street Corner Heroes". Thus, Guidry became known as a talented songwriter in the beginning of 1980's. It is quite natural that Guidry secured his own solo artist deal with Columbia Records in 1982. The first solo LP "Over The Line" was released in 1982, that included a hit song titled "Goin' Down" that peaked at number 17 on Billboard Hot 100, self-cover versions of "Gotta Have More Love" and "Are You Ready For Love". During the 1980’s, Guidry continued to do songwriting work later in the 1980s for Sony and EMI Music Publishing, and collaborated with songwriters like Bill LaBounty, Steve Kipner (GENIE IN A BOTTLE and LET'S GET PHYSICAL) and Jeff Silbar (WIND BENEATH MY WINGS). Guidry did not release a follow-up album until 2000. Lastly, it should be noted that Greg Guidry passed away on 28 July, 2003 by fire of his residence. Alessi / Long Time Friends
The Alessi Brothers, also known as Alessi, are an American pop rock singer-songwriter duo; identical twin brothers, Billy and Bobby Alessi born 12 July, 1953, West Hempstead, New York. When the twins were working in the Broadway cast of Hair early 1970’s, they came across Peppy Castroe and the three formed the band Barnaby Bye and were signed to Atlantic Records in 1973. The band released two albums; “Room To Grow” (1973) and “Touch” (1974). The brothers continued writing, recording and performing as the duo, Alessi. In 1977, their song "Oh Lori" (from the 1976 album “Alessi”) reached no. 8 and spent 11 weeks in the UK Singles Chart, and became a Top 10 hit in 17 more countries. The first 4 Alessi albums (1976–1979) were released on the A&M record label, with this fifth album, “Long Time Friends” was released in 1982from Quincy Jones's Qwest Label on Warner Bros. Records. According to the official website, the album was originally titled "Roughen It," and for good reason. As Billy states, "We're lovers of music and can't help but write songs." With that, a compilation of "rough" demos found its way to Michael Ostin at Warner Brothers who felt it would be the perfect material for Quincy Jones' new imprint, Qwest Records. With Michael and pop star Christopher Cross at the helm, the songs would become thoroughly produced and released as the album, "Long Time Friends, " featuring a duet with Patty Austin and Billy Alessi. Tender Leaf
A hidden Hawaiian treasure, Tender Leaf was not known generally because the group was not a professional group and this album was released by themselves locally under their own label, Tender Leaf Records in 1982. It seemed to be around 1995 that a Japanese music writer brought this album into Japan and wrote a recommended review, thus some DJ started to play this vinyl at the club steadily. I admit this album is surely one of the most comfortable Hawaiian albums full of free-soul feeling. Patty Weaver
Patty Weaver is known for her acting career rather than as a singer. She played on daytime soap opera “Days of Our Lives” from 1976 to 1982 and on “The Young and the Restless” from 1982 to 2009. Before launching her acting career, Weaver formed the rock 'n roll band the Loved Ones and continued her singing career and released several albums; “Patty Weaver Sings 'As Time Goes By' “ (1976), then, "Feeling" (1976) under RE/SE Records, USA, that features pops masterpiece tunes such as "I Honestly Love You" performed by Olivia Newton John, which were arranged more Jazzy. In 1978, Patty released another album titled "No One's Ever Seen This Side Of Me" under the same label, on which Patty covered Eagles' "Take It To The Limit",Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and so on. In 1982, this self-titled album was released on major label; Warner Bros. Records. This is another Steve Barri's excellent producing works in late 1970's or early 1980's. As you easily guess, Robbie Buchanan's arrangement made this album's atmosphere into the same one as that of "Maxus / Maxus". Patty sings emotionally and energetic being supported by awesome Westcoast studo musicians. Release: 1982 Label: Warner Bros. Michel Berger / Dreams In Stone
Michel Berger was a famous French producer born on 28 November, 1947 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. The reason I regret to use "was" in the former sentence is that he was gone to the eternal world in 1992. In early 1970's Michel became known as the producer of French singers, Véronique Sanson and France Gall, whom Michel got married in 1976. His tunes written for the opera rock musical "Starmania" (1978) are well-known all over the world. In 1980, Michel released his own pop-rock album "Beausejour" in 1980 in France, featuring many talents such as Jim Keltner, Simon Phillips, Neil Larsen, Tom Saviano and Gary Herbig. And, in 1982, this US release album "Dreams In Stone" followed. Michel had many awesome guest vocalists including Bill Withers, Jennifer Warnes and Bill Champlin. Just for your information, he released the album "Voyou" featuring his own French lead-vocal tunes in 1983 supported by Brecker Brothers and other talented musicians. Player / Spies Of Life
Although Player lost two founding members and their third album “Room With A View” (1980) was not successful enough, Peter Beckett seemed not to be pessimistic because he got Dennis Lambert to write new materials for the fourth album. “Spies Of Life” was released on RCA Records in 1982 featuring seven songs written by Beckett - Lambert out of ten songs on it. Peter Beckett and John Friesen welcomed Miles Joseph on guitar, who was credited on the third album “Room With A View” as a session musician, and Rusty Buchannan on bass. The founding partner of Peter Beckett, J.C Crowley also contributed to the album as a co-writer with Dennis Lambert on the song "I'd Rather Be Gone'. Due to unsuccessful sales of their second and third albums, this fourth album was underestimated although many good tunes such as "If Looks Could Kill", "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" and "I'd Rather Be Gone". Another thing to be noted is that Tommy Funderburk and Tom Kelly were on the record as background vocalists. After this album, Beckett decided to be a full time songwriter and thus the band Player history stopped in 1982. Beckett began writing hits formOlivia Newton-John, Heart, Little River Band, and many others. John O'Banion / Danger
It is a little complicated for me to review "Danger" because this album is his third album here in Japan but his second album in USA. After big success of his debut album with "Love You Like I Never Loved Before" both in Japan and in USA, John O'Banion performed live in Japan and he won the grand prix at Tokyo Music Festival with his new song "I Don't Want To Lose Your Love" in the spring of 1982, which made him more popular in Japan. Wea Japan would strongly hope that they should release John O'Banion's new album as soon as possible. Thus, the album "Close Up" comprising of 7 new studio recording tracks later included on his US second album "Danger" plus 3 live tracks "Thru The Eyes Of Love", "Standing On The Edge" and "Caught" recorded in Japan in April 1982. And several months later, we had his full studio recording album "Danger". It is my impression that this album has been very popular especially in Europe more than in Japan and in USA. In February 2011 when the album was re-reissued, all the tracks only on “Close Up” were added as bonus tracks, thus the complete “Danger “ edition became available. Adrian Gurvitz / Classic
Adrian Gurvitz's brightest music career was started when he joined the hard rock band "The Gun" and released the album "Gun" in 1968. Once Adrian Gurvitz disbanded the trio Gun, he started a new heavy rock project "Three Man Army" with his brother Paul and former Spooky Tooth drummer Mike Kellie, and released their debut album "Third Of Life Time" in 1971. "Threee Man Army", "Mahesha" and "Three Man Army II" followed. Adrian then embarked on another venture - "Baker Gurvitz Army", featuring legendary Cream drummer Ginger Baker. The band recorded 3 albums, "Baker Gurvitz Army" (1974), "Elysian Encounter" (1975) and "Hearts Of Fire" (1976). In 1979, Adrian started solo career with the album for Jet Records, "Sweet Vendetta", followed by "Il Assassino" in 1980. These albums featured Adrian's softer side, with the slickly produced mellow soul sounds by getting full support of L.A. top studio session musicians such as David Paich and Jeff Porcaro. And in 1982 Adrian released this album "Classic". Release: 1982 Label: RAK Records, UK (SRAK 547) Tracks: 1. No Fears In The Night 2. Living Ain't Easy Without You 3. Hello New York 4. Your Dream 5.
