Riding Bean
Riding Bean is a 1989 anime original video animation following the exploits of courier-for-hire Bean Bandit and his partner, gunwoman Rally Vincent. You may assume that this album should be a kind of typical soundtrack for Japanese animation video, when you see the artwork of this album. Answer is definitely "No"! Once you start to listen to this album, you are obliged to change your basic stance when you come across this kind of soundtrack album. I am fully aware that some of AOR/Westcoast lovers seems to avoid buying soundtrack or concept albums due to their prejudice and I should point out how they lost chances to listen to good music. This soundtrack album can prove that my observation would be right. This music was written and recorded for a Japanese animation video called "Riding Bean" in 1988 featuring the L.A. "west coast" musicians mainly involved in David Garfield's project band "Karizma". Therefore, this might be said to be alternative or hidden Karizma album. In addition to very very excellent instrumental tunes such as "Bean Bandit Boogie" featuring super guitar performance by Michael Landau, you are able to enjoy several vocal tunes featuring Phil Perry. This CD had been one of the hardest-to-get CDs for a long time even though it was reissued on 19 May, 1993. We were pleased that David Garfield reissued the album as “David Garfield & Friends / Music From Riding Bean” under his own label Creatchy Records in November 2001. Kenji Omura / Kenji Shock
This album is one of the true masterpiece fusion album done by Japanese guitarists. Kenji Omura was well-known for his guitar performance with Yellow Magic Orchestra in early 1980's worldwide. I use the word "was" because this greatest Japanese guitarist is gone. (Kenji passed away in November 18,1998 at the age of 49. This album "Kenji Shock" was his second solo album and has been reissued very first time on CD in the winter of 2000. This album is full of awesome smooth soulful guitar play made by Kenji Omura supported by L.A. top musicians including supporting guitarists like Steve Lukather and Lee Ritenour, and other TOTO members, i.e. Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro and David Paich. Kenji's guitar play on this album would be as great as other giant guitarists like Larry Carlton. Highly recommendable fusion album of late 1970's! Larry Klimas / Retro-Spec(t)
Chicago-born Larry Klimas one of LA first call horn players was a member of the rare white group signed by Motown Records, Puzzle featuring John LiVign (aka John Valenti) in early 1970’s. Eventually John Valenti started solo career and the Puzzle disbanded, Klimas started as his studio musician’s career in Los Angeles. In 1980, Klimas joined the War as the successor of late Charles Miller. Whilst he played an important role at Lee Oskar producing works, he also works very closely with David Garfield over decades including Garfield’s band Karizma, the project "Tribute To Jeff Porcaro", Luis Conte's solo albums and so on. In the summer of 1999, finally Klimas finished and released his first solo album "Retro-Spec(t)". This was one of the best urban contemporary Jazz albums of 1999. And for the AOR-maniacs, the album features "What's Goin' On" featuring Jason Scheff on the lead vocals with Bill Champlin and Joseph Williams on the background vocals. Denander-Gaitsch / Counterparts
This record is a guitar collaboration album completed by two guitarists, each of whom has his own established play-style. One is then young, passionate and full of energy and the other is the matured, soulful and full of intelignece. Who are they? The then young guitarman is Tommy Denander, who seems to be strongly affected by Steve Lukather and Eddie Van Halen. The matured guitarman is Bruce Gaitsch. When I listened to this album first in 1998, I could not help feeling a kind of tension made by these two totally different guitar performances in the good meaning. Bruce succeded to add a kind of order and harmony to Tommy's naive and innocent guitars. I believed that Tommy had something different from the other then young guitarist who could even play the guitar much faster than him, that must be a kind of music sense grown up from his child days. I dared to say that this album was at least five times better than mid 1990’s Steve Lukather's solo album. Worth listening. Lastly you would appreciate that Bill Champlin dedicated his vocals on "Crawfish Blues". Release: November, 1998 Label : Angelynn Music, USA(ANG-003) Tracks 1. Quality Time 2. Hellevator Music 3. Karizma / Dream Come True
"Karizma" was formed originally in 1975 by David Garfield, Ralph Rickert, Carlos Vega, Domenic Genova and Richard Tokatz. The band played mainly at Los Angeles night clubs. In 1983, David Garfield recorded and released this first Karizma’s album "Dream Come True" with top Los Angeles based musicians including Steve Lukather, David Paich and Jeff Porcaro from TOTO, Dean Parks, Neil,Larsen, Ernie Watts and many more. Personally “Say You Will” was one of my favourite songs in 1980’s. Originally, the album was released in 1983 only for Japan and Oceania on vinyl format. It was 1987 when the vinyl was reissued on CD but only in Japan. It was February 1998 when the album was reissued by David Garfield himself on his label Creatchy Records (CR-009) and widely available in USA and Europe. The album artwork was changed as the second photo shown. Release: 1983 Label: Vap Inc., Japan (35108-26) Release Date: February, 1998 Tracks: 1. Ire 2. I Want You So 3. Heavy Resin 4.
