Seeing the success of the new Porsche 911 GT1, Nissan decided to replace the Nissan Skyline GT-R that they were using in the GT1 class with an actual purpose-built racecar. They went to TWR to develop their new racecar. During the 1997 Le Mans Prequalifying, an R390 ended up being the fastest. However, before the qualifying for the actual race, the cars failed scrutineering and the team was forced to make modifications, I believe, to the exhaust. Although this #22 car was able to qualify 3rd, it still wasn't able to match the prequalifying pace and the other 2 cars were much slower. During the race, the cars would suffer from problems that were caused I believe by excessive heat which was, in turn, caused by the modifications they had to make to the car to allow them to race. Of the 3 Nissan R390 GT1 cars entered that year, only the #23 was able to finish but it was way behind the leaders and was actually outside the top 10.
