This is the car that pretty much started what would be the end of the GT1 class. It was the first purpose-built GT1 car. The other cars in the class before it, for example, the McLaren F1 GTR and the Ferrari F40 LM, were all based on road cars. This one was developed as a racecar and then had a road car developed based on it. The car's debut would be at the 1996 Le Mans 24 Hours where they would qualify as the fastest among the GT1 cars, but still behind some of the LMP/WSC cars. During the race, they would start really well but were eventually passed by the Porsche-powered TWR prototypes from the Joest team. Throughout the race, the Porsche 911 GT1 #25 would have a battle with the two TWR Porsche prototypes. Eventually, the TWR Porsche #7 would win the race, a lap ahead of the #25 Porsche. This #26 Porsche would eventually finish 3rd, more than 10 laps behind the top 2 finishers.
