Listed below is a copy of the original manuscript faxed from SYD MEAD's studio in Hollywood to director Peter Hyams and the prop team.
Conventional robots acted like suits with a person inside. However, the director asked SYD MEAD to create an image of an autonomous robot without a person inside. SYD researched the Tsukuba Science Expo, where the most advanced robot technology of the time was on display, and sought a face that could express facial expressions using the eyes as icons.

The gimmick of a tool box in which a bucket placed on the ground opens upside down to reveal limbs seems to have been the first idea. The design process from there to the slim form of only a skeleton is described in the sketchbook: KRONOTECO(1991), which has quite so much pages.

以下に掲載するのは、ハリウッドにあるSYD MEADのスタジオから、ピーター・ハイアムズ監督と小道具チームに送信されたFAX原稿。
従来のロボットは、スーツの中に人が入っているようなものだったが、監督はSYD MEADに、中に人が入っていない自律型ロボットのイメージを作ってほしいと依頼。SYDは、当時最先端のロボット技術が展示されていたつくば科学万博でのロボット展示でリサーチ。目をアイコンとして表情を表現できる顔を探した。

地面に置かれたバケツを逆さに開けると手足が現れる道具箱のギミックが最初のアイデアだった。
そこから骨格だけのスリムなフォルムになるまでのデザイン過程がスケッチブック： KRONOTECO(1991)で掲載されている。
